An infantry battalion of Marines from Hawaii, find themselves deployed to fight in the biggest, urban battle since the Vietnam War. The city of Fallujah, in al-Anbar Province, Iraq, has been hijacked by a foreign, Islamic fundamentalist insurgency, that is hell bent on attacking Americans and torturing and killing Iraqi civilians. The Marines are tasked with ridding the city of the jihadist fighters and giving it back to its people. Lava Dawgs is a down and dirty perspective of grunts on the front lines of urban combat.

Lava Dawgs A Fight for Fallujah Charlie Moose 9781495486401 Books

This was a hard book to read, as I am the Gold Star Mother of a Marine killed in the battle detailed in the book; but from the first word to the last I could not put this book down. It is raw, profane, and real. The language it that of a Marine serving in hell and doing his duty, hoping to make it another day, another hour, another minute, and ready to die if need be. The verbal imagery is stark and vivid, if shocking to the civilian sensibilities.

Lava Dawgs A Fight for Fallujah Charlie Moose 9781495486401 Books Reviews

I have read many books on various wars. To understand the perspectives of Marine grunts, the door kickers, the death dealers and soul stealers, this book by Charlie Moose is the grittiest, most visceral and engaging of perhaps any I have read. No pictures, no filler, all killer. Don't let the # of pages concern you. It is on wide pages, and reads like a 400 page book. Want a civilian view into what It was like to "be there?" Buy this book!
Frank and unvarnished, it's the true story about Marines in Fallujah in 2004. I've read a number of first-hand accounts of war, from the greeks to present, and this is one of the better ones. Don't let you high school English teacher grade this, it's not that kind of writing. But in terms of gripping stories of bravery matched with the activities that fill the rest of a Marine's days, it's a very worthwhile read. Very graphic, not suitable for kids. Semper Fi and God Bless the United States Marine Corps.
This book demands the respect of intense reading, once I started I couldn’t put it down, it was that good. Lava Dawgs-A Fight for Fallujah is an inspiring chronicle from the perspective of an Infantry Marine who is on the ground level during the biggest urban combat since Vietnam. However, the story goes far deeper than reading a story told by someone who observed it. For each of us that may be different.

With such illustrative and vivid descriptions combined with a rat-a-tat momentum this book provides a deep and valuable insight for anyone who might strive to understand the undertone that resonates with these brave men during three months of intense combat operations. The inclusion of poetry, scripture, and lists of those fallen soldiers provides moments of pause where the reader can take a breath.

I enjoyed the brief descriptions of the individual service members, which helped to “humanize” the story, and even provided pieces of humor amidst the brutality. This book gives you a front row seat to what these gallant soldiers endured for our freedom. I gained perspective and gratitude for those who risk their lives and sacrifice daily.

I would highly recommend this book to non-military readers like myself. I admire the courage of the author to so selflessly, and more importantly honestly, share the story of the Lava Dawgs.
If you want to know what combat is really about, then read this book. It is realistic, it is raw, it is explicit, and for some of you that have not been there, it will make you wonder if the author is making it up. He is not. I was an infantry Marine in Vietnam. A different kind of war. But the emotions, the smells, the reality of it all is the same. Combat brings out the best of people, and sometimes the worst. We ask our young men and women to do a job that 99% of people simply cannot fathom. There is a saying, "war is hell; combat is a M--f--r". This book captures that. I would have given the book a 5 star, but I read the edition, and it appears there was next to no editing. Misspelled words, wrong or no punctuation, run on paragraphs. Very annoying.
Rawness. The Second Battle of Fallujah. You want to know how it was, what it felt like, this is it. And this is why some readers may not be able to take it. The author paints an admirable, poetic portrait of the young men you grew up with or lived next door to, and takes you on a journey of self-discovery. By and large, there was nothing extraordinary about these kids, other then that they knowingly chose to be Marine Corps infantrymen, undisputedly the main effort and burden-bearers of the Corps.

The reader will get a glimpse of the frustrations and small comforts of life as an enlisted Marine from the mundane to the exhilarating, from the noble to the despicable, and from a combat unit with an inferiority complex at being kept out of war for years before a high-ranking officer with connections finagled an audience with the enemy. This is the story of a transformation, from kids to hardened men.

Through their experience is seen the courage and love that can only be revealed in trials such as theirs. This illustrates to all how extraordinary people are not born, they are made as they are placed in unfathomable situations revealing their true character.

I can imagine the author and his Marines digging deep and discovering some of their virtues they didn't know or weren't sure existed inside of them; and as you will read, you'll also see their pain as they encounter their own failings.

This may make some of the readers uncomfortable, because you'll feel what they've felt, the good and the bad. You can read other accounts written of the war from an airplane view; but if you want to see it as it was on the ground, where it really counts, search no further than the poetic reminiscences and reflections of a defining moment of many men's lives, through the brushstroke in time painted by Charlie Moose, and colored by the men around him. Simply getting this on paper is a trial in and of itself, having to relive the agony.

Only through a true appreciation of life awakened by the exigencies of war--including in oneself--can we realize the need to advance, even if it hurts. There's no other choice. The reader will hopefully empathize enough to forget his own desire and seek to understand how life and death are for others, so that we may live the life we were meant to live, as others have trod a path on which we'll never have to suffer. It makes one glad one didn't have to suffer; but it makes one envy he lacked the privilege of suffering alongside such men.
