I liked this book very much. It is intelligently written and the reader must pay close attention or wonder what happened a few lines above. I am reminded of books written in days past--maybe the Victorian era. The story is interesting to me, of course, but the beauty of the writing captured my attention. I read quite a lot, and this book is very different because the story is not simply laid out on the pages--one must think and work at getting it. Hopefully this author has written other books; I will look forward to reading more.Product details

Doors of the Night Frank L Frank Lucius Packard 9781290771917 Books Reviews
I couldn't maje it through the book. The story seemed to move somewhat. But I've rarely read such complicated and long sentences.
Great Read!!
Interestingly woven plot , much like that of an Agatha Christie novel. Ok for a brief departure from modern writting.
Author deliberately uses long-winded sentence structure to mimic a Victorian style, but this is just annoying and obstructive. I finally began to skip entire pages as he consistently repeated information. Given judicious editing this would have been very good. The plot was creative and characterization was well executed.
Had a bit of a problem accommodating the deeze and doze and dems to clarify the story . However, it all started to make sense as the plot thickened. Good story, very interesting read.
This is the first book by Packard I have read, and I will certainly read more. It was a mix between Mickey Spillane and Agatha Christie. When young Billy Kane's millionaire philanthropist boss is found murdered everything points to Billy. Escaping the police to try to prove his innocence, Billy takes refuge in the underbelly of the city, only to discover he is a dead-ringer for a criminal boss who has, seemingly disappeared. Taking over his look-alike's gang, Billy keeps busy trying to keep up his charade, foil the gang's criminal plans and find the real killer of his beloved boss. Literly coming through a trap door, the Woman in Black appears to complicate Billy's already perilous life. In and out of scrapes, close calls, and dangerous meetings, will Billy survive until he is exhonorated? An exciting read!
I rate this one four stars. You might call this the Adventures of Jimmy Dale, without Jimmy Dale. It is pretty much the same story with a slightly different twist. Our hero is a young man who just happens to be the spittin' image of one of the Kings of the Underworld in Lower Manhattan, fellow name of "The Rat." Our hero just also happens to be framed for the murder of his employer, and life long friend of his father, and the theft of a priceless collection of rubies. He is on the run when he stumbles on a planned robbery and decides to go to where the robbery is in progress, and just happens to get recognized by the thief as "The Rat." He decides to assume that identity while he works to clear himself of the robbery and murder he has been framed for. So far, so good, but wait a minute; there's a dame in the game, and she is out to wreck "The Rat." She has the goods on him and has the evidence to send him to the chair, unless he does her bidding and foils the jobs he and his gang have already planned. Of course, our hero has no idea what these plans are, and on the run for his life for a crime he didn't commit, he can't tell HER who he really is...well, I think you can figure out where this is going.
For free on ...this one is worth your time.
